Storm-Damaged Fence Repair in Allen, TX
North Texas thunderstorms bring straight-line wind and hail, and a privacy fence is a long flat surface facing it. Here is the order things happen in after a section comes down.
First: Close the Yard
If a pool is now open to the street or a dog has no yard, say so in the first sentence of your call. A temporary closure comes before the repair.
The City of Allen’s fence guideline requires a barrier at least 4 feet high around a pool or hot tub. A fence lying on the lawn is not one. A contractor can stand panels back up with braces or put up temporary fencing the same visit, then come back to do the permanent work.
Before anything is moved, take photographs: the whole run, each broken post at the ground, any limb or object that hit the fence, and the neighbor’s side if you can.
City of Allen, Residential Fence Guideline, dated June 2026, read October 5, 2026.

What a Storm Usually Breaks
- Posts snapped at the ground. A wooden post already weakened by rot breaks where it meets the soil. The break is often dark inside, which shows the rot was there first.
- Whole sections laid flat. When two neighboring posts go, the panel between them falls in one piece. The pickets and rails are often reusable.
- Pickets blown off. Old fasteners let go and boards scatter. This is the simplest repair.
- Impact damage. A limb or a trampoline through the fence breaks rails and pickets in one spot and may leave the posts fine.
Wind finds the weakest posts. If several broke, check the ones still standing before paying to rebuild only the gap.
The Permanent Repair
Broken posts come out with their footings and steel posts go in, 18 inches deep in concrete as the city’s guideline describes. Fallen panels that are still sound are rehung on the new posts. Broken rails and pickets are replaced.
After a storm that hits a whole neighborhood, material and crews are in short supply for a few weeks. Getting on a contractor’s list early matters more than waiting for the perfect quote.
Insurance: whether your homeowners policy pays for a fence, and how much after the deductible, is between you and your insurer. This site cannot advise on a claim. A written, itemized quote from the contractor is what an adjuster will ask for.
If the storm took down a fence shared with a neighbor, the conversation about cost is the same as for any repair: shared fences in Texas.
