Allen Fence Repair FAQ

Plain answers about fence repairs in Allen, the city’s rules and how this referral works.

Questions and Answers

Who actually repairs the fence?

An independent fence contractor that works in Allen. This site passes your request along and does none of the work.

Does it cost anything to use the site?

No. You pay a contractor only if you hire them.

Which places do requests come from?

Allen first, including Watters Crossing, Cottonwood Bend, Fountain Park, Twin Creeks, Waterford Parks, StarCreek and Montgomery Farm, and the neighboring cities of Plano and McKinney.

Why is my fence leaning?

Nearly always a post. Wooden posts rot at the ground line, and any post can loosen as the clay around its footing shrinks in dry weather and swells in wet. The boards lean because the post did.

Can a contractor replace only the posts?

Often, yes. The rails are detached, the old post and footing come out, a new post is set in concrete, and the rails go back on. Whether it is worth doing depends on the condition of everything else.

How deep do fence posts go in Allen?

The City of Allen’s fence guideline says posts must be placed 18 inches deep in concrete. A contractor may go deeper for a taller fence.

How tall can my fence be?

Up to 8 feet in a back or side yard under the city’s guideline. Your homeowner association may set a lower limit or require a particular style.

Do I have to call 811 for fence posts?

Texas811 says Texas law requires homeowners and excavators to contact 811 two business days before digging. A contractor normally makes the request for a job they are doing; confirm that they have.

Does the contractor hold a state license?

Texas does not license general contractors at the state level and this site found no state fence license, so that is not something to ask for. Ask for proof of liability insurance and a written warranty instead.

What should I have ready when I call?

The address, the rough length of the problem stretch, whether the fence is wood or metal, whether the posts are wood or steel, and whether a pool or a dog depends on the fence being closed.

How fast can someone come out after a storm?

That depends on how widespread the damage is. Say plainly if a pool is open to the street or a pet cannot be let out, so the contractor can plan a temporary closure.
