Fence Staining and Sealing in Allen, TX
Stain will not straighten a post or harden a rotted board. On a fence that is still sound, it evens out the color and slows down what sun and water do to bare wood.
What Stain Does and Does Not Do
Stain and sealer protect the surface of sound wood. They are maintenance, and they come after structural repairs, never in place of them.
Bare cedar turns gray as sunlight breaks down the surface and rain washes it away. North Texas adds long hot summers that dry boards until they cup and crack. A penetrating stain with a sealer slows the moisture swings and blocks some of the sun.
If the fence leans or the pickets are soft at the bottom, fix that first. See posts and rails and pickets.

How the Job Goes
Clean
Gray wood, dirt and mildew are washed off so the stain reaches clean fibers. Too much pressure scars soft cedar, so ask how the contractor cleans.
Dry
The fence dries before stain goes on. The same applies to a newly built fence: fresh lumber holds moisture and is usually left for a few weeks. The stain maker’s label sets the wait.
Protect what is nearby
Plants, the house wall, concrete, the pool deck and the neighbor’s side are covered or shielded. Sprayed stain drifts.
Apply
Stain is sprayed, brushed or both. Brushing after spraying works it into the wood.
Color, Neighbors and Your HOA
The City of Allen’s fence guideline says nothing about stain or color. Homeowner associations often do, and some approve only certain shades so that fences along a street match. Ask yours before buying stain.
On a shared fence, your side and the neighbor’s side are both faces of the same boards. Stain soaks through knots and gaps and can mark the other side. Tell the neighbor before the work, and ask the contractor how they prevent bleed-through and overspray.
After a repair, staining the whole run is how new tan boards and old gray ones end up one color.
Questions About Fence Staining and Sealing
How often should a fence be stained?
It depends on the product and the sun exposure. Follow the stain maker’s interval and look at the south and west faces first, since they weather fastest.
Can an old gray fence be stained?
Yes, if the wood is sound. It is cleaned first so the stain takes evenly.
How soon can a new fence be stained?
After the lumber has dried. The contractor and the product label will give the wait.
Does the City of Allen regulate fence color?
The residential fence guideline this site read does not mention color. Check your homeowner association’s rules.
Sound Fence, Tired Color?
Give the length and height and a fence contractor can price cleaning and stain.
